Hydration during the summer months

Water is intertwined with the existence of life. It is, after all, the element with the highest concentration in our body, contributing to our weight by 55 – 75%. Its value is invaluable, as it participates in a large number of body functions, such as digestion, absorption and transport of nutrients from food to tissues, while it is essential for thermoregulation, that is, for maintaining body temperature at constant levels.

Especially in the summer months when the need for fluids is increased, and our desire to maintain our figure is even greater, good hydration is a priority in a balanced diet. Specifically, with the high temperatures that develop in summer, the body eliminates more water through sweat, lungs and urine, and for this reason it needs a higher fluid replenishment.

It is particularly important to meet the needs of three special population groups: the elderly, pregnant and lactating women, and children. Dehydration and heatstroke occur much more quickly in children than in adults, making it essential to drink fluids even when they are not thirsty, especially during the summer months.
